Course Outline

Day 1 Algebra – A fully loaded session of core skills from forming and solving linear equations in context, to solving simultaneous equations, drawing and interpreting linear graphs, rearranging and sequences.

Day 2 Ratio & Number – A mixture of ratio problem solving scenarious covered, in addition to percentage change and reverse percentages, fraction decimal and percentages worded problems and standard form.

Day 3 Geometry & Measures – Angle consolidation in polygons and parallel lines, surface area and volume, pythagoras and trigonometry.

Day 4 Statistics & Probability – A whole range of statistical diagrams covered including scattergraphs, calculating mean from frequency tables and a mixture of probability skills from venn diagrams, frequency and probability trees.

Susan

Susan is a qualified teacher, current head of department and GCSE examiner. She has taught Maths key stage 1-5 including GCSE and A-level. Proficient at teaching 11+ GL, CEM and common entrance exams and has a 100% pass rate of those applying to independent schools. Susan is also an examiner marking both Edexcel and AQA GCSE papers.

Course Outline

Day 1 Algebra – A focus on the most frequently tested topics including: forming and solving equations (including quadratic simultaneous equations), calculating with algebraic fractions, sequences and functions/graphs with parallel, perpendiculars, circles and tangents.

Day 2 Ratio & Number – A breadth of topics covered from manipulating with surds(up to grade 9) and indices, bounds, proportionality (direct and inverse) and ratio scenarios in context including combined ratio.

Day 3 Geometry & Measures – A range of angle skills and applications revising angles in polygons, parallel lines, circle theorems and trigonometry (from SOHCAHTOA to sine and cosine rule)

Day 4 Statistics & Probability – Popular statistical areas covered in this topic from the breadth of diagrams (histograms, cumulative frequency, boxplots) to a range of probability skills including Venn and tree diagrams.

Course Outline

Day 1: language and structure

Students will learn how to identify and analyse writers’ language and structure choices for effect. Revision will include planning, language techniques, structural features, sentence form, and subject terminology.

Day 2: compare and evaluate

Students will learn how to offer perceptive comparison and critical evaluation of writers’ ideas and perspectives. Revision will include planning, methods used, supporting points, and paragraphing.

Day 3: Creative writing

Building on revision from Day 1, students will learn how to write adventurous narrative and descriptive writing responses. Revision will include, planning, literary devices, sentence variation, and punctuation.

Day 4: transactional writing

Students will learn how to write convincing and compelling responses to common transactional writing genres. Revision will include planning, form, tone, purpose, and persuasive writing techniques.

Course Outline

Session 1: Genetics & Natural Selection

We will look at cell division both in single celled and multicellular organisms (mitosis) moving on to meiosis, reproduction and protein synthesis.  With this knowledge we will study genes and alleles, genetic diagrams, Mendelian inheritance and variation of individuals.  Applying this knowledge, we will study natural selection and evolution in populations reviewing the evidence for evolution in humans and other animals and the emerging science of genetic engineering.  We will look at practical techniques and past paper questions.

Session 2: Communication, Circulation and Exchange in Plants and Animals

Understanding how multicellular organisms organise their structures is key to understanding how complex life evolved and sustains itself on the planet.  We will look at transpiration in plants, phloem and xylem vessels, plant hormones and photosynthesis.  In humans, we will look at the lungs and the heart, gas diffusion and the structure and function of the blood as well as the basics of respiration.   We will cover practical knowledge needed for the exam and look at past paper questions.  This course will also deal with the basics of the immune system and vaccination.

Session 3: Ecosystems

Understanding organisms and their interrelatedness is key to modern biology.  We will study ecosystems and the interaction between organisms, how we investigate ecosystems practically, energy transfers and tropic layers, conservation and biodiversity, indicator species and the role of decomposers.  Additionally we will discuss food security and the water, carbon, nitrogen cycles and undertake past paper questions.

Session 4: Animal Control and Homeostasis

We will study the difference between hormones and neurones and how both play a role in controlling biological systems.  We will focus on adrenaline and thyroxine and how they act on the heart and other organs and understand what is meant by negative feedback mechanisms leading to homeostasis.  A detailed study of the menstrual cycle, its hormones and fertility as well as glucose regulation and the pancreas and osmoregulation in the kidney including a detailed look at the nephron will be conducted with the use of past paper questions.

Course Outline

Session 1: Matter, motion, forces and energy

Starting with course basics which will include the three phases of matter, we will look at density, internal energy of substances, temperature including absolute zero, kinetic theory, specific latent heat and specific heat capacity looking carefully at graphs and calculations.  We will then move on swiftly to velocity, displacement and time graphs and calculations, the session will include Newton’s laws and momentum.  This then leads on to energy stores and transfers, work done, power, resultant forces, moments, leavers and gears.  We will look at questions that require practical knowledge and go over past paper questions.

Session 2: Waves and the electromagnetic spectrum

Starting with the basic of waves, we will advance to look at wave behaviour at boundaries, refraction and reflection, sound, ultrasound, light, lenses, the electromagnetic spectrum, emission and absorption and temperature.  We will look at questions that require practical knowledge and go over past questions.

 Session 3: Radioactivity

Starting by understanding how the model of the atom was developed, we will look at energy levels in atoms and spectra, nuclear structure and isotopes and radiation.  We will construct nuclear equations helping understand nuclear decay and half life, look at the uses and danger of radiation, for example in PET scans and radio therapy.  Using this knowledge we will look at nuclear fission in power plants and fusion in the sun.  As always, we will look at where practical knowledge is needed in written questions and at some past papers.

Session 4: Electricity and magnetism

Starting with basic circuits, we will unpack what is meant by current, charge and potential difference.  With this knowledge we will move onto resistance, looking how to investigate the properties of circuit components.  We will look at the differences between series and parallel circuits and calculate resistance, energy and power. With this knowledge, we will look at electric and magnetic fields, magnets, electromagnetic induction, motor effect and generators and transformers ensuing practical knowledge is cemented and answering past questions
